In a country like Spain, characterized by the mixture of cultures throughout history, it is vitally important in order to foster interest in culture, research and information, to have an institution whose purpose is to preserve the bibliographic heritage. , sound, visual, audiovisual and digital of the country's culture at each historical moment.
This institution is made up of the legal deposit. The legal deposit allows the General Administration of the State and the Autonomous Communities to comply with the duty to preserve and collect copies of publications of all types reproduced in any type of medium and destined by any procedure for distribution or public communication, rental or sale.

In a world in which technologies advance day by day, it is essential to adapt as quickly as possible to these advances and not be left behind, which is why the Council of Ministers has recently approved continuing with the processing of the draft law that modifies the 23 / 2011 of Legal Deposit.
This decision is based primarily on the need to adapt to the changes produced in recent years in the publishing sector. This is why the new law will allow for a more effective role in the conservation of the national edition and will optimize the management of conservation centers by improving and perfecting the collection of publications, which, for greater adaptation to today's world, It will imply a progressive incorporation of digital media into the editorial landscape.
However, this new law also implies a series of relevant changes for the Spanish audiovisual sector, specifically, the Spanish Film Library will be recognized as a conservation center. and the figure of the producer will be given, implicitly, greater importance.
Regarding the importance of the figure of the producer, we will see how the new law will include as an obligation for the subjects obliged to request the legal deposit number to include not only the editor, but also the producer. Likewise, with the approval of the new law, legal deposit will imply the inclusion of the original materials related to any cinematographic film made by a producer with domicile, residence or permanent establishment in Spanish territory.
But we will not only talk about the legal deposit of "cinematographic films" but the concept of "other audiovisual works" will also be included, which will refer to those audiovisual works that are not intended to be exhibited only in cinemas, but this concept will refer to to audiovisual works that reach the public through other means of communication.
At the moment the draft has been submitted to public consultation, so we will still have to wait to know the new regulation that will apply to the Legal Deposit in Spain.
