On Monday, April 8, 2013, WIPO communicated
officially the accession of India to the International Registration System of
Brands. With it, there are now 90 member countries of the Madrid System.

The Minister of
Indian Industry and Commerce, has deposited its instrument of accession to the
Protocol Concerning the Madrid Agreement Concerning International Registration
of Brands. As of its entry into force, scheduled for July 8, 2013,
brands in India will be able to protect themselves through Indian national trademarks
and also through international registrations and designations with India as
Contracting Party.
