In recent years, the number of countries that have joined the Madrid system. The pace at which the American continent is incorporating members to the Protocol is especially relevant and with this new opportunities arise for the protection of trademarks of owners with interests in the western part of our world.
Jamaica has been the last country to announce its incorporation into the Madrid Protocol whose entry into force is scheduled for March 27th 2022.
The North American influence (mainly the US and Canada) in trade relations is especially intense in this country. And, although Jamaica, at an international level, is not a large brand market nor can we expect a large consumption of foreign goods, it is undoubtedly an important international tourist center in which the Spanish hotel presence is very relevant. It is also a large producer and exporter of sugar cane, spices and fruits, coffee, tobacco and cannabis (a market of great expansion in the pharmaceutical and therapeutic industry) and, of course, of music. reggae of which it is the cradle, temple and universal reference.
