From Thomas A. Edison to the Gillette razor: 160 years of protecting the ideas that changed the world

Madrid, July 7, 2025.— ELZABURU, a firm specializing in industrial and intellectual property, is celebrating its 160th anniversary this year since its founding in 1865. It is currently recognized as Spain’s oldest firm in the field of industrial and intellectual property.

The firm has played a role in many milestones in the development of intellectual and industrial property: in 1907, it participated in the creation of the first Spanish Intellectual Property Association; in 1972, it succeeded in making Spanish an official language of the AIPPI; in 1996, it registered the first European trademark; and in 2004, the first international trademark in Spanish.

To commemorate these 160 years of history, Elzaburu has set up a small museum in its offices that pays tribute to the history of innovation. In this exhibition space, visitors can view original designs, sketches, and historical documents used to register some of the world’s most significant inventions, trademarks, and designs, many of which marked a turning point in everyday life and technological development.

Among other innovations, the firm was involved in the registration of patents such asThomas A. Edison’s incandescent light bulb;Graham Bell’s telephone;Singer’s sewing machine; various photographic devices by theLumière brothers; ; the safety razor, byGillette; the autogyro, byJuan de la Cierva; and the internal combustion engine, byRolls-Royce.

Throughout its history, it has registered trademarks such asNestlé, Cadbury, Martini, Harley-Davidson, Dunlop, and Coca-Cola, as well as the first Community designs for Mercedes and Mitsubishi. Elzaburu has supported innovators and entrepreneurs in protecting and defending their intangible assets, becoming a key player in economic and technological development over the past 160 years.

Today, Elzaburu is a firm specializing in protecting, defending, and promoting all aspects of industrial and intellectual property. It has a team of 155 professionals, including attorneys and technical experts from various fields (engineers, chemists, biologists, biotechnologists, physicists, etc.), who advise on, manage, and oversee the legal defense and protection of rights at every stage of the life cycle of intangible assets.

It currently manages more than 60,000 trademarks, more than 4,700 patents and industrial designs, and has handled or is currently handling more than 1,500 litigation cases.
